The aim of the PMS Studies contract is to de-risk the application of PMS technologies and philosophies to Royal Navy future warship procurement. This is achieved through a process of risk identification and mitigation activities, based on the requirements for future warships. In this context, the PMS Studies 'product' takes various forms, such as software tools, knowledge databases, research studies and guidance documentation.

Using the MoD Acquisition Management System as a framework, the PMS Studies team is conducting research into how the MoD 'Concept, Assessment, Demonstration, Manufacture, In-Service and Disposal' (CADMID) acquisition cycle relates to key issues in the development of PMS, such as the demonstration of intelligent ship board systems, the linking of disparate ship systems, the development of a robust and operable Man Machine Interface (MMI), and the application of information modelling philosophies.
